Description:
#101649, Waffenfabrik Mauser Oberndorf a/n: A 250-3000 Factory Deluxe Kurz (K) Short Action Small Ring Round Top Commercial Sporter Model S (Stutzen or Short Rifle) Carbine Made in 1929; Deluxe features you never see on a Commercial Sporter, Upgraded wood, buffalo horn forend insert, horn extension back of the trigger guard, profiled bolt release and a profiled trigger guard, Built on an Kurz action, 20" Barrel, Band front ramp, Barrel band sling eye, 3 leaf sights with 2 folding & 1 standing, Left receiver side marked "Waffenfabrik Mauser Oberndorf a/n", Hinged floorplate with a swing lever release, Double-set triggers, A modern wing safety, Correct pear shaped bolt handle, Matted receiver ring, The receiver ring was never drilled or tapped, The rear receiver bridge was but the holes were plugged and can only been seen from the inside of the bridge: Every serial number everywhere matches including the stock, receiver, barrel, bolt, bolt sleeve, bolt stop release, rear sights, trigger, magazine box and the floorplate, The extractor serial number does not match, The full length Type S stock with very nice color and contrast, Cheekpiece, Buffalo horn grip cap, Sling eye on the buttstock line, Horn wedge shaped forend tip, 2 piece forend, Wrap around point pattern checkering on the grip & forend, 14 5/8" LOP over the original horn buttplate with the Mauser crest and Mauser name, Great Sporter weight at 6 Lbs. 2 Oz., The internal inletting looks like the day it left the banks of the Neckar River, The blue on the barrel and receiver overall remains at 98%, It has been re-blued at one time but I can assure you it was not buffed or polished, The floorplate and trigger guard remain at 99%, The stock finish is at 98%, The checkering is at 99%, The bore is excellent plus and looks like new. The bolt handle has been worked on and polished, I presume because of a sight installed on the rear bridge or a cocking piece sight as the cocking piece is dovetailed for a peep sight, I have no clue where this gun has been for the last 95 years, and I am most certain it never went on many hard hunting trips hunting and it was not shot a great deal. This piece was in the hands of the great Master Gunsmith, Jack Haugh, so I presume he did all the work on it. This is one neat between-the-wars Type S with neat added features plus Deluxe wood. I have had my share of Commercial Mauser's but Type S Sporters, different from a Type M Mannlicher style full stocked carbine, are rare and few ever are seen.

Paul von Mauser passed away May 29, 1913, and left an everlasting legacy with the Gewehr 98 system bolt action magazine rifle. Last year, 2023, marked the 125th Anniversary of the 98 Mauser. It is the most notable turn bolt action rifle ever designed as it has been copied more than any other. The 98 system was Paul Mauser's masterpiece. Mauser made fewer sporting rifles than all other major arms maker's but the impact of that very design will never be exceeded. No one has beaten him since and most likely no one ever will.
