SAGINAW STEERING GEAR DIVISION w/SLING & OILER

Here we present a Saginaw U.S. M1 Carbine, manufactured circa 1944 by the Saginaw Steering Gear Division of General Motors in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This .30 caliber semi-automatic rifle was first used by the United States Armed Forces on October 22, 1941. There was a total of 6,110,730 carbines made of all types during the war. Saginaw carbines were produced at two different locations between 1943 and 1944 with identification codes determining the location. The identification code of “S’G” indicated that the carbine was produced their plant in Saginaw, Michigan. A total of 293,592 carbines were produced at this location. The identification code of “S’G’” indicated that the carbine was produced at their plant in Grand Rapids, Michigan. A total of 223,620 carbines were produced at this location, making the grand total of Saginaw carbines manufactured at 517,212, which was about 8.5 % (293,592 or 4.8% in Saginaw and 223,620 or 3.7% made in Grand Rapids). Despite having a similar name and appearance, the M1 Carbine is not a carbine version of the M1 Garand rifle. They are different firearms and use different ammunition.
