Description:
*** PRICE REDUCED TO $8500, FIRM *** This Colt Government Model pistol was manufactured in 1935. It was shipped to the Ship Service Store of the U.S.S. CANOPUS, (AS-9) Attn: Lt. Sweeney on January 21, 1936. As you may know it is highly unusual for Colt Records to document delivery to a U.S. Navy ship. These records provide a steppingstone for the pistols’ history as told by the ships service.
The Canopus, a Submarine Tender was found at the tip of Bataan on Christmas 1941. By Jan.1, 1942 she had received several bomb hits but continued serving Submarine Squadron 20. To prevent further attack her men placed smoke pots around the ship and she was listed during the day giving the impression of an abandoned hulk. Bataan surrendered on 9 April and on 10 April she was backed off under her own power and scuttled in deep water. The ships Capt. was rescued and returned to the U.S. in a Submarine.
This Colt Government Model pistol remains in excellent original condition. The factory original finish shows minor wear on high edges and loss of finish on the grip straps. The biggest flaw, and a minor one at that, is a minor ding on the rear sight where it may have been bumped or dropped. The barrel is properly marked and has an excellent bright shiny bore. The slide / frame match, as evidenced by the serial number marked on the slide under the firing pin retainer.
This is a beautiful example of an early Colt Government Model pistol that is rich in history. It is documented to a U.S. Naval ship that served our nation heroically. The Colt Letter is included in this sale as is the Book “GHOSTS OF CANOPUS”.
I’m sure this is just the beginning of a research project, much more may be discovered.
This is clearly an Investment Grade Firearm and one that would enhance most collections.
