Description:
CIVIL WAR COLT Model 1855 Revolving MILITARY PATTERN Rifle .58 Caliber Root

Early Attempt at a Revolver Repeating Rifle

Here we present an antique Colt Model 1855 Revolving Military Pattern Rifle, manufactured circa 1855 through 1864 in Hartford, Connecticut. This early repeating rifle bears much resemblance to the “Root” pocket revolver (named for inventor and machinist and Colt’s superintendent and later president Elisha K. Root) and is essentially a scaled up version of the same. It uses a cylinder arbor that inserts from the back of the frame which is also contains the ratchet responsible in revolving the cylinder. The hammer is mounted to the side of the frame, rather than in the center, as a result. These rifles and shotguns, both for military sale as well as commercial, were ambitious for Colt. Like Colt’s Paterson rifles and shotguns, these proved a bit delicate, not to mention expensive. Nevertheless, these were used through the American Civil War as this military pattern rifle certainly was.
This one has a 31 3/16” barrel with a two-leaf rear sight in a full-length stock. It would have originally been produced in .56 caliber. The cylinder chambers and barrel have been bored to about .58 caliber, perhaps in an effort to simplify ammunition as the US had settled on .58 caliber at the time and would have been by far the most common on the battlefield.

The overall condition is good. The action is strong, the cylinder indexes to the next chamber, though lockup has some play. The top strap of the frame as well as the bottom tang of the frame have both been repaired. The bore is smooth and patinated. The butt stock has been refinished and remains solid. The fore end has a split emanating from the tip of the loading lever to the rearmost barrel band; otherwise solid. Here is a rare Colt Revolving Military Rifle!
