Description:
1880s SCARCE Antique COLT Model 1878 12 Gauge DB Side x Side HAMMER SHOTGUN

CASEHARDENED Double Barrel Made in 1882

Here we present an antique Colt Model 1878 Double Barrel Hammer Shotgun, manufactured in Hartford, Connecticut in 1882. The Model 1878 was made from 1878 to 1889, with approximately 22,683 guns manufactured. These double barrel shotguns were an exposed hammer double gun that competed closely with high-end Parkers. The Colt Model 1878 Double-Barrel Hammer Shotgun is considered to be, if not the finest, one of the finest American double-barrel shotguns ever made. The Model 1878 Shotgun was the highest priced item in the Colt line and was available in almost any grade as a special-order item. This double trigger shotgun is a 12-gauge solid rib with 30-inch barrels.

According to one source, “the Model 1878 Hammer Gun ranks among the best grade doubles produced in the entire American arms trade. The limited number completed and the great pains devoted to handling specific orders from often fussy shooters means that a considerable degree of quality and variety is evident in the Model 1878 series.”

The overall condition is good. The Damascene twist pattern is still visible. The numbers match. The actions are excellent, although the hammers do not match. In this case, the left trigger is the lead trigger, which operates the left hammer for the left bore. The bores are nicely reflective and smooth aside from some very light pinpricking nearest the chambers. The walnut stock shows use and wear and overall remains solid, but does contain some light toe chipping. There are some minor repairs around the tangs and some sign around the butt plate that it was sanded at some point.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
