Made for Military School Youth
Here we present an antique Springfield Armory US Model 1851 Cadet Type Musket, manufactured in 1853 in Springfield, Massachusetts. This one has a barrel that is view and proof marked with the eagle head of US Ordnance as well as a date of 1853 on the top of the barrel. This example’s lock is either unmarked or the markings have been removed. It is our opinion that this musket was made of left over parts from Springfield Armory, perhaps by Bannerman’s in the latter half of the 19th century and sold commercially. Still a scarce piece, the ones that were completely built by Springfield and then sent to known military academies such as VMI and Westpoint are quite rare and fetch a premium. This is a good opportunity to fill a niche in a collection at a more affordable price point.
The overall condition is fine. The bore is smooth and bright. The action is excellent. The stock is solid. There is a split along the grain of the buttstock on the right side that is shallow and unmovable—it does not appear to be the result of impact but rather a natural defect of the wood or aging process. A good looking musket!
