NEW JERSEY STATE MILITIA INFANTRY ARM

Here we present an antique New Jersey State Militia Model 1816 Rifle-Musket manufactured in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by Marine T. Wickham in 1827. This musket would have started out life as a flintlock and was converted to percussion by Hewes and Phillips in 1861 for use in the American Civil War. The Model 1816 saw use from right after the War of 1812 up through the American Civil War. Many of these saw conversion from flint to percussion and the Hewes & Phillips upgrade was one of the best. They cut the original breach off of the barrel to install the large new bolster, rifled the bore, gave the barrel a rear sight, installed a front barrel band with an improved front sight, and once they had removed all the old frizzen and unnecessary hardware from the exterior of the lock they filled in all the holes and ground it all flat, installing a Model 1861 Springfield type hammer.

The overall condition is very good. Original patina. The action is excellent. The bore is patinated with good rifling. The stock shows inspector markings on the left stock flat. The left side of the barrel is marked “N.J.” for New Jersey. The top of the barrel is dated “1861” for the year of conversion, while the lock still bears the original maker and date of manufacture information with a year date of “1827”. The bayonet is in great shape.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 41-1/8 inches.
