Description:
Rare NAVY HOLSTER U.S. REMINGTON 1867 NAVY Rolling Block .50 Pistol Antique

ORD DEPT NY 1869 Leather Holster

Here we present an antique U.S. Remington Rolling Block Model 1867 Navy Pistol with a U.S. Navy Leather Holster made in Ilion, New York circa the late 1860s to early 1870s. The Model 1867 pistol uses a .50 caliber Remington Pistol Center Fire cartridge and a thumb latch activated Rolling Block. These were an update to the previous Model 1865, which was made for rimfire cartridges. The action was quite robust and could easily withstand the increased pressure of the new smokeless powders coming into use by the late 1880s.

The rolling block design was an evolution of the split breech carbine design of Leonard Geiger. Geiger’s intent was to design an arm using a metallic cartridge that could be cheaply and easily manufactured for use during the American Civil War. Remington manufactured about 20,000 split breech carbines in three different rimfire calibers, but most were delivered too late to be used in the war. These pistols were a strange selection for a martial pistol given the prevalence of revolvers by this time and the obvious drawbacks of single shot weapons. Nonetheless, they are powerful sidearms and are incredibly reliable, just like the Remington rolling block rifles.

These had a sturdy, simple action that was relatively inexpensive and was just the ticket for shipboard weapons for the U.S. Navy. These were, in fact, firearms that would not see a whole lot of use the vast majority of the time. An anchor is located on the top of the barrel along with “W.D.W.” for Ordnance Inspector U.S. Navy Commander W.D. Whiting. Also included is a scarce U.S. Navy leather holster marked “ORD’DEPT” over an oval marked “NAVY YARD/NY/1869”. The top flap is gone but this is a very neat rig for this pistol!

The overall condition is very good. Original patina. The action is excellent. The bore is bright with sharp rifling. The walnut grip is solid. Clear markings throughout. A great piece for the USN collector!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 7 inches.
