Description:
It has become nearly impossible to find a Winchester 1873 Rifle in this 22 Short caliber with high condition original finishes AND a nice bore, but this exceptional example offers both!
With well under 20,000 '73s ever made in .22 caliber, seemingly few have survived with any reasonable level of collectibility, with the vast majority encountered being in poor condition, with rough bores, or having udergone varying levels of restoration. While not perfect, this rifle remains in outstanding condition relative to its age and peers, and represents a special opportunity for the collector.
S/N 243999 made in 1887.
24" Octagon barrel with an excellent bore as mentioned. The barrel has never been relined.
Strong original bluing throughout, particularly on the barrel and mag tube, with some typical light toning/spotting on receiver and side panels. There are strong case colors remaining on the hammer, trigger, and crescent buttplate. The lever has faded mostly to silver.
The wood is sound with no cracks or other major detractors beyond the usual light handling marks scattered about and along the toe line. The finish is bright and clean overall.
Original sights consist of a Beach combination front and a sleek and very scarce special order Winchester precision tang sight at the rear, which was limited to use only on the Model 1873.
All mechanical functions are smooth, crisp and precise with everything appearing to work exactly as it should.
Comes complete with a copy of the Cody Firearms Museum letter.
A very fine and very tough to find rifle, which would be quite difficult to upgrade!
