Description:
#13611, John Rigby & Co. Dublin & London: A Superb Best Quality Rigby (1/2 Double Rifle) Tip Down Break Open Rotary Double Grip Underlever of the Henry Jones type, A 450 3 1/4" Black Powder Express Single Shot in Superb Condition with a Bore like New, A 28" Steel barrel that is serial numbered to the gun, London proved with the Rigby Trademark, It has 2 folding & 1 standing rear sights of a Gibbs Sporting type sight with a forward fold-up elevator sight all platinum lined, Sling eye on the barrel, Half cock hammer with a rear bolted lock/safety, Beautifully carved breech head with a deep percussion style fence, 14 5/8" LOP over a full face checkered steel buttplate, 8 Lbs. 6 Oz., Excellent wood figure with deep black & brown contrast, Alex. Henry pattern forend with a buffalo horn forend tip, A cross bolted forend key seat tiedown, Total original wood that has been professionally oiled, The checkering is sharp & crisp, Horn grip cap, 80% coverage of period scroll engraving, It retains 60% of the original case colors with the balance in a nice patina, The engraving is as sharp as the day it was cut; The super news on this piece is the bore condition that remains in excellent plus condition and almost appears like new without a pit anywhere in the entire length of the bore or chamber, The barrel black remains at 97%, "John Rigby & Co. Dublin & London" is Gold inlaid on the top flat of the barrel at the breech, On the breech face it is stamped with a large "B" and a "T" intertwined with the #203, This has got to be Thomas Bissell with all the ties he had to Rigby with his patent in 1879, Patent No. 1141, for the barrel locking method which we call the rising-bite, I feel this gun must have something to do with the Bissell patent #1461 of 1865, It will still perform with 1" accuracy at 75 yards using a 350 grain bullet, It is cased in a full length leather slip/scabbard with a canvas cover that is modern, This is nice stuff with a neat action, super cartridge, superb bore and by a Maker with a name that will live forever from the United Kingdom and certainly not California. I will be honored to quote my friend on this classic gun, Mr. Wal Winfer. "We are but temporary custodians of all things on this planet. Treat this old piece gently. Load and shoot it with care. But, above all, preserve its integrity for the future enjoyment of the next temporary custodian.
