Description:
LETTERED, ENGRAVED S&W No. 3 .44 RUSSIAN Revolver

Sent to Hartley & Graham, Engraved w Pearl Grips!

Here we present an Engraved Antique Smith & Wesson New Model No. 3 Single Action Revolver in .44 Russian, sent to Hartley & Graham in December of 1880 in New York, New York per the Accompanying Factory Letter. Per the letter, Hartley & Graham handled the engraving and pearl grips in-house as a special order piece. Jacob Rutsen Schuyler (1816-1887), Marcellus Hartley (1828-1902) and Malcolm Graham (1832-1899) incorporated their company on March 1, 1854. In 1876 Schuyler retired from the company and by 1880 they changed the name to Hartley and Graham. They made it as suppliers to the Union during the Civil War and continued their success after the war as importers and dealers of arms.

This revolver in .44 Russian looks like it was used extensively and worn everywhere. This deadly piece of art would have been quite the status symbol with its engraving, nickel finish, and mother-of-pearl grips. It looks like there is the remnant of a name on the backstrap of the grip. If only this thing could talk!

The overall condition is good. 15% of the nickel finish remains. The markings are legible. The grips are a bit yellowed with age and chipped from use. Otherwise, they remain solid. The bore is in good condition, clean with nice rifling. The action is strong, though there is a chamber that slips a little in the cylinder’s revolution. Here is a gorgeous Smith & Wesson No. 3 in .44 Russian with a Letter. A rare combination and a stunning piece of history!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 6-1/2 inches.
