Description:
SCOTTISH JOHN DICKSON & SON P-1856 Short Rifle 2-Band Edinburgh 577 Antique

High Quality Version of the British Military Arm

Here we present an antique British Proofed John Dickson & Son Pattern 1856 Short Rifle made circa 1861 in Edinburgh, Scotland. The firm John Dickson & Son is still operating and is the oldest gunmaker in Scotland. Founded by John Dickson (Sr.) in 1820 Edinburgh, the company became known for its quality hunting and sporting arms. John apprenticed under another great Scottish gunmaker, James Wallace, who had his shop on High Street in Old Town Edinburgh and which John later took over before eventually becoming John Dickson and Son (with John Jr.) in 1838 at 60 Princes Street. The shop moved in 1848 to 63 Princes Street. John Junior’s boys, John III and Peter, followed in their father’s and grandfather’s footsteps, and it was John III who developed the Round Action that became one of the firm’s flagship mechanisms.

This rifled musket would have been made for a well-healed customer as the quality is at least a cut above the standard Enfield Pattern rifle being contracted for by the British Army. The fit and finish of this rifle is impeccable from the blued finish on the barrel to small detail of engraved screw heads. The right side of the barrel has a lug for a sword bayonet. The barrel is secured by two screw fastened bands. The top of the barrel is stamped with three British commercial proof and view marks on either side of two “25” gauge marks. There is also a stocker marking under the butt stock “WATERSTON”, and what appears to be a rack number of “478”. Birmingham proofs.

The overall condition is fine. Original blue finish on the barrel and clear markings throughout. The action is excellent and very strong. The bore is shiny bright with sharp rifling. The stock is solid and shows a small amount of handling. This is a rare opportunity to own one of Dixon’s military rifles, which are superior in both aesthetic and overall quality.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 33 inches.

Caliber: .577 Percussion
