Description:
c1813 BRASS OCTAGONAL BARREL KETLAND FLINTLOCK Mountain Man Pistol  Antique

With Birmingham Proofs and Tombstone Trademark

Here we present an antique T. Ketland & Co. Flintlock Pistol, made circa 1813 to 1821 in Birmingham, England. Thomas Ketland Sr. was a highly successful Birmingham gunmaker who started his business around 1760 and expanded into the export market around 1790. He died in 1816, though his heirs carried on. The company manufactured flintlock pistols and locks, becoming quite successful in its field.

John and Thomas Ketland were the sons of Thomas Ketland and grandsons of William Ketland, who had been making locks and guns for the colonies since the early 18th Century. The lock plate is marked “T./KETLAND/&Co” and the barrel is marked “LONDON”, though it has Birmingham proofs as well as the Birmingham “tombstone” marking with a lion and the number 3 within, a marking associated with Birmingham gunmakers specifically at this period in time. This pistol would have been used in martial fashion, very likely in post-war North America. Whether a settler in his local militia or a mountain man by himself in the wilderness this pistol would have served as a necessary tool in a day of single shot rifles.

This pistol features a handsome brass (gunmetal) swamped octagonal barrel with other brass hardware to include the lock plate. Only the cock, frizzen, and barrel tang are iron. Nicely engraved.

The overall condition is very good. Nice patina. The markings are clear. The action has only full-cock and it strong. The bore is smooth and patinated. The stock is solid. A great piece of early-19th Century history!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 9 inches.

Caliber: .54 Flintlock
