A John Blatter was also in business in “Ripley, Brown County, Ohio,1880-1891.” Making “Fine percussion target and sporting rifles.” The gun is inscribed with Blatterlein on the right lock and Brooklyn on the left. The barrels Blatterlein or Brooklyn carry the Liege black powder proof (ELG*) in an ovel and what I presume to be the barrel maker’s mark JB in a circle. The barrel rib is inlayed in gold “BLATTERLEIN TE DEVENTER”. One then would assume that John brought the barrels with him from Deventer, Holland ca. 1866. Deventer was an industrial iron and metal working center in the 18th and 19th centuries - possibly extending back to the 9th century. The overall condition is very fine. It has lovely 30” Damascus barrels; nicely figured mahogany colored walnut stock with basket -weave checkering and original varnish The locks are clean without any blemishes. Some of the gold inlay on the barrel rib has come out. But what appears to be the original finish throughout is near excellent – lock, stock & barrel. It is in good working order. This is quite a nice 20-gauge sporting gun. Small gauge percussion pieces are rare. I have taken it out for quail on several occasions. It handles and shoots just as well as a modern one – except for slow reloading.
