Description:
Mid-1800s EAST INDIA COMPANY Pattern 1842 .75 RAMPANT LION Marked Musket

Large Bore .75 Caliber PERCUSSION MUSKET

Here we present an antique East India Company Pattern 1842 Percussion Musket, made circa the mid-1800s. This musket was based on the British Brown Bess flintlock musket that was in previous use for decades. This musket would have served with the East India Company in an official capacity over the next several decades of the 19th Century. It is very likely that it was witness to the Indian Mutiny in 1857. This musket shows signs of use well after it was made obsolete, likely in Indian hands. The lock is marked with the Rampant Lion motif of the EIC.

The Brown Bess series of flintlock muskets had been the iconic shoulder arm of British military power for over 100 years when the development of the percussion lock made them obsolete. As early as 1834, the Ordinance Board began looking for a percussion musket to replace the old flintlocks, and in 1839 the Tower of London Armory began converting the existing flintlocks to the new percussion system. In October 1841, a fire swept through the Tower, destroying thousands of muskets there for conversion. This caused a shortage of shoulder arms, and the Pattern 1842 Musket was rushed into production.

The overall condition is good. Strong action. The bore is in good shape for its age. Solid stock with less than expected wear, minor dents, and dings. Legible markings and proofs. Rampant Lion marked lock.
