Description:
WILD WEST Antique COLT M1878 12 Gauge Side x Side HAMMER Shotgun SCATTERGUN

VERY NICE Double Barrel Manufactured in 1879

Here we present an antique Colt Model 1878 Double Barrel Side by Side Hammer Shotgun, manufactured in Hartford, Connecticut in 1879. The Model 1878 was made from 1878 to 1889, with approximately 22,683 guns manufactured. These double barrel shotguns were an exposed hammer double gun that competed closely with high-end Parker Brothers guns. The Colt Model 1878 Double-Barrel Hammer Shotgun is considered to be, if not the finest, one of the finest American double-barrel shotguns ever made. The Model 1878 Shotgun was the highest priced item in the Colt line and was available in almost any grade as a special-order item. This double trigger shotgun is a 12-gauge solid rib with 28-inch barrels.

According to one early source, “the Model 1878 Hammer Gun ranks among the best grade doubles produced in the entire American arms trade. The limited number completed, and the great pains devoted to handling specific orders from often fussy shooters means that a considerable degree of quality and variety is evident in the Model 1878 series.”

One can probably assume that this shotgun was used by a settler heading west during the westward expansion. It would’ve been used for putting food on the table or for protecting the homestead.

The overall condition is good. Strong action. The bore is in good shape, remains smooth, with a lightly frosted appearance. Fine stock, contains less than average wear. Nicely checkered wrist. Legible markings. Numbers on the trigger guard do not match. Finish on the damascus barrels has matured to a brown patina.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
