Description:
CASED Antique 7-Shot COLT NEW LINE .22 Caliber RF ETCHED PANEL Revolver

Engraved to Dealer WILLIAM KAVANAGH & SON

Here we present an antique Cased London Colt New Line .22 Revolver, made in 1876 in Hartford, Connecticut, & sold by Dublin, Ireland dealer William Kavanagh & Son. The backstrap on this example is marked “Wm. KAVANAGH & SON. 12 DAME ST. LONDON”. This piece is London proofed as these were imported through London. We found that the address engraved on the revolver (12 Dame Street) to be a Dublin address of the Kavanagh & Sons company.
The “New Line” was a single action pocket revolver introduced by the Colt’s Patent Fire Arms Manufacturing Company in 1873 and continued through 1884, with the .22 caliber being manufactured between 1873 and 1877 with a total of roughly 55,343 being manufactured.

This revolver was designed to be a small but potent self-defense revolver for stowing in one’s pocket in the 19th Century. Spur Trigger “Suicide Special” manufacture was fierce during this time, and Colt struggled to compete against the countless small shops making very similar, less expensive revolvers, though not necessarily of the same quality. The Colt remained a steady, reliable force in firearms for much longer than the rest.

The revolver features 7 shots of .22 rimfire. Of all the Colt “New Line” revolvers made, the .22 caliber was the only one featuring a 7 shot cylinder. All other calibers utilized a 5-shot cylinder. The patent dates are on the bottom of the barrel. Two years after the Colt House Revolver, a year after the Colt Open Top, and almost simultaneously alongside the Colt Peacemaker, the Colt New Line was one of the first metallic cartridge, rear-loading revolvers manufactured by Colt.

The overall condition is very good. Original nickel and fire blue finish. The action is strong, but the cylinder binds on one of the chambers. The bore is in good shape with good rifling. The grips are in great shape. London proofs on the cylinder chambers and barrel. The small, fitted case is in fine condition and measures a compact 3-3/8” x 5-7/8”.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 2-1/4 inches.

Caliber: .22 Rimfire (Short, black powder)
