Description:
Antique MAUBEUGE French Model An IX GENDARMERIE .62 Pistol NAPOLEONIC WARS

FLINTLOCK Military GENDARMERIE Pistol

Here we present an antique Flintlock French Pistolet Modèle An IX, or Pistol Model An 9, made at the Maubeuge Arsenal in France circa 1812. This model was manufactured at all three of the French Arsenals, Charleville, Maubeuge, and St-Etienne. The Pistolet modèle An IX was a flintlock cavalry pistol, in service in French units from 1801. The modèle An IX replaced the modèle 1777, which had been criticized to the point where the older modèle 1763 had been brought back into service. The Pistolet modèle An IX was designed to equip mounted units, each horseman using two pistols. It was used in most mounted units of the Consulate and during the early years of the Empire, as well as in the Navy. In 1806, the Pistolet modèle An XIII was introduced. The two systems co-existed for some time, until the last modèles An IX were upgraded to the An XIII standard.

A Gendarmerie is a military force with law enforcement duties among the civilian population. The Police Nationale is responsible for Paris and other urban areas whereas the Gendarmerie is responsible for small towns and rural areas with fewer than 20,000 inhabitants. These pistols are of robust construction with lots of brass for support. The bore is a massive .62 caliber. Without knowing the exact date of the manufacture of this pistol, it is possible, if not likely, that it was used during the latter Napoleonic Wars.

The overall condition is good. The action is strong, but the top jaw is missing. The bore is very good for its age. Solid stock/grip with average wear. Legible markings. The metal parts have been refinished in nickel. Ramrod rod is absent.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 5 inches.

Caliber: .62 Percussion
