Description:
This is a handsome cutlass that measures 33 3/4" overall, with a 29" straight, single-edged, unfullered blade. The steel has an overall mottled gray-brown patina on both sides with old sharpening marks, as well as additional old tool marks where the British and maker markings where removed. The iron hilt and guard are of typical pattern with circular and heart-shaped lobed counterguard, flat pommel with exposed rivet, and ridged grip with nineteen perpendicular grooves and six axial grooves. The iron has an overall dark patina with heavy pitting along the edges and surfaces. The removal of the markings is interesting, possibly indicative of the weapon’s capture at some point (no rack number can be discerned on the guard lobe as would’ve been added by an American ship), and the cutlass rates very good-near fine otherwise. It would make a great addition to any collection.
