Description:
Antique BALLARD by BALL & WILLIAMS .38 Rimfire Worcester, Mass.

Scarce 1 of about 5,000 Sporting Rifles Made

Here we present an antique Ball & Williams Ballard Sporting Rifle in .38 Rimfire, made by Ball & Williams in Worcester, Massachusetts. This was the first maker of the Ballard patent rifles and carbines and the largest of the 5 prior to Marlin, making about 15,600 overall, most going to government contracts during the American Civil War. However, about 5,000 were made as sporting rifles for hunters and the like. This rifle has a 24” octagonal barrel in .38 rimfire with a fancier walnut stock and capped forearm. This one has a front sight that can either be a post or an encircled fine post, a barrel mounted rear sight, and a tang mounted peep sight.

The Ballard design was one of the favorite long arms during the Civil War period, though production numbers do not necessarily reflect it. The original designer was Charles H. Ballard and his agents Merwin & Bray oversaw production between several different companies. It was a simple, single-shot falling block action and was one of the early guns that would fire a metallic cartridge.

The overall condition is near fine. Original blue finish on the barrel with silvered formerly case colored receiver. The action is excellent. The bore is shiny bright with sharp rifling. The wood has very nice grain to it. The butt stock has been expertly repaired around the tangs. The numbers match. This is a very nice Ballard rifle from around 1863!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 24 inches.

Caliber: .38 Rimfire
