A Gorgeous Set of Ornate Pistols in Fitted, Personalized Case
Here we present a cased pair of antique Duelling Pistols Belonging to Dr. William Brashear Lindsay of New Orleans, Louisiana, made circa the 1850s in Liege, Belgium. These excellent .45 caliber pistols show a high degree of workmanship with scroll engraving on the locks, breeches, tangs, pommels, trigger guards, and side plates. Each of the guns is numbered on the breech and tang, 1 & 2, respectively. Stocks are carved at the fore end and fluted at the grip. The case is fitted to the guns and all the accoutrements: an embossed powder flask, single cavity bullet mold, lead ball, cap tin, and ivory handled ramrod, mallet, screwdriver, lead dipper, and brush. The exterior of the case bears a silver placard with the inscription “DOCTOR/William B. Lindsay/NEW ORLEANS”.
Dr. William B. Lindsay was born on May 13, 1806, in Claiborne, Mississippi, and died on August 6, 1866, in New Orleans, just after the close of the Civil War. He was the son of Judge William Lindsay (1769-1817) who died on Natchez Trace in the Old Choctaw Nation. William married Ruth Caroline Brashear Lindsay November 1, 1829, in Claiborne County, Mississippi. They had a son, William Brashear Lindsay Jr. (1850-1943) and two daughters, Mary Virginia Lindsay Simmons (1835-1922), and Clara Lindsay Crow (1836-1873).
William Brashear Lindsay was a doctor in New Orleans, living in the city for about 21 years, and known for his skillful cholera treatment. He was said to have successfully treated one outbreak of the disease on his plantation in 1832 as well as an epidemic in New Orleans in 1849. His recipe for his prescription was recorded as follows: 10 oz. French Brandy, 10 Drachms each of Essence of Peppermint, Etherial Tincture of Valerian, Spirits of Camphor, Tinct. Red pepper, 7 drachms Tinct. of Opium, 5 drachms of Tinct. of Catechu, 2 oz. Syrup of Ginger.
The good doctor, like many of his kind, was somewhat of a Renaissance Man, not only caring for his regular clients, but also listed in the local papers as a doctor that saw indigent patients out of charity. Lindsay was President of the local school board for 8 years, a 2-term member of the State Legislature, and in his spare time invented a breech-loading cannon capable of firing 30 shots per minute according to the Shreveport Daily News from May 30, 1861. The article also states that he was having a rifle made using the principle.
In the years following the American Civil War, Dr. Lindsay was reportedly a “large sufferer by losses during the war”. Unfortunately, we know nothing further as records show a dearth of information about him from about 1862-1865, however, we do know that at some point he seems to have closed his business temporarily as newspaper articles in the immediate post-war period recommend his services. In April of 1866, he declared himself a candidate for the office of Coroner for the parish of Orleans, though he would pass away only several months later. It is clear that he was very well-regarded in his state and his city when he passed at age 60.
The overall condition of both pistols is fine. Original high polish blue finish. The actions are excellent and crisp. The bores are sharply rifled and in great shape. The stocks are solid. The case is in good condition. The accessories are all in great shape as well.
