Description:
RARE Antique C.S. PETTENGILL .31 Caliber POCKET Model PERCUSSION Revolver

Early Double Action Revolver!

Here we present a rare antique C.S. Pettengill Percussion Double Action Pocket Revolver, made just prior to the American Civil War, circa 1858-59, by Rogers, Spencer & Co. in Willow Vale, NY. The design was a double action hammerless percussion mechanism initially developed by C.S. Pettengill in the 1850s. In 1856, he was granted a patent for it. By 1857, Samuel Colt’s patents regarding the firing mechanism were expiring and Pettengill’s initial design was improved by Edward A. Raymond and Charles Robitaille, for which they received a patent in 1858 in which production started shortly thereafter.

The two patents showing on this revolver are “PETTENGILLS/ PATENT 1856” on top and “RAYMOND & ROBITALLE/PATENTED 1858”. There would be a third patent given to Henry S. Rogers in 1862 including the final improvements in the Pettengill revolver. This example is serial number “117” and has no “1862” patent marking, making this a very early, hard to come by Pettengill “Pocket” revolver. Smaller revolvers such as these were popular as a "backup" for officers, when their Colt Army needed reloading.

The overall condition is good+. The action (internal hammer/trigger) functions, though the cylinder does not advance (the cylinder will lock up in alignment with the barrel when the trigger is pulled). The bore is in good shape, remains clear and has an aged patina. Numbers match. This example has been nicely refinished. Both grips are in good shape. Sharp markings.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 4-1/2 inches.

Caliber: .31 Percussion

Overall condition as seen in photos.
