This is a very cool and scarce Walther "Einstecksystem P38 Kal.5,6mm", a factory .22 caliber conversion "plug-in" kit for the P-38 family of pistols. This conversion kit was made in 1964 for the German Federal Police (BMI) and is 100% complete and in excellent condition overall. It comes with it's original Walther factory-made fitted wooden case which is also in excellent condition and complete with all of the original labels and lettering. These .22 conversion kits were made for both the German military and police forces for accuracy/marksmanship training. It allowed the use of their standard service pistol but in a much less powerful .22 LR cartridge with very little recoil and noise. This kit is serial number 234, made for the German Bundesministerium des Innern, für Bau und Heimat (BMI). The right side of the slide is stamped with the police ownership marking of "BMI" above the manaufacture date of 11/64, both of which are located just ahead of the slide serrations. There are two proofs stamped below the date. The left side of the slide has a polished oval where the Walther factory marking is stamped. Both the barrel and the slide are stamped with the serial number 234, while the magazines are not serial numbered. The slide assembly is factory finished in a matte "military" blue finish, while the barrel and magazines are finished in a gloss blue. The factory finishes are all in excellent condition overall, showing only minor handling marks and a touch of finish wear on some of the high-edges. The bore in the .22 caliber barrel insert is mirror-bright and perfect, with sharp rifling and no visible erosion or imperfections. There is no visible mechanical wear on any of the pieces, it is obvious that this kit has been used very little over the last 60 years. The feed lips on the two magazines are in perfect condition and the follower springs are strong. If the new owner chooses to use this kit we have no doubt that this conversion kit will still function just as well today as the day it left the Walther factory in 1964. If you own a 9mm Luger P-38 or one of the post-war variations this vintage Walther conversion kit would be a great addition to your gun and should continue to be a superb long-term investment.
