We don't know the exact chronology but to the best of our knowledge the 37 Deerslayers were the lst Deer Slug Specific Shotguns to have been produced. It made sense as the Southern Tier in NY State a deer rich area but more densly poplulated with human population than the Northern Tier and Adirondacks required the use of shotguns for deer as it was thought a stray shotgun slug less likey to carry to an unintended target than a rifle bullet. The fine old Ithaca Gun Company In NY responded to the demand and produced the original Featherlight Deerslayers. The early guns (37's) were not rifled but were upen choked and had good rifle sights and were quite effective. This gun the 87 was the successor to the earlier guns and improved in that the barrels are fully rifled, factory set up to accept a scope and chambered for 3" as well as 2 3/4" slugs. A separate interesting fact is that Ruger in early 60's lst produced thier handy 44 mag carbine, the lst iterations of which were called Deer Slayer or Deer Stalker. Ithca sued Ruger and prevailed ...Ruger had to stop using that name so that now early Ruger Carbines carrying the name are sought after by some collectors. This gun ...the gun being sold is in very good lightly use Shipping is 59.00 s Price: $775.00 |
