Description:
The Brothers Bisley
Herein are notes regarding Colt Bisley serial numbers 372370 and 274007 and how they became reunited after being separated for many years.
On January 11, 1906 the Colt Manufacturing Company of Hartford, Connecticut shipped twin Colt Single Action Bisley pistols to the Copper Queen Consolidated Mining Company in Bisbee, Territory of Arizona. These Colt Bisley Pistols were not normal production pistols; they were special orders and were shipped directly to the mining company.
Based on the way the Bisleys were ordered with Colt Factory Pearl Grips each of them must have been intended to be used by persons of importance at the mining company or as presentation pieces. The serial numbers are not consecutive (272370 and 274007) but according to the letters from the Colt Historian these two Bisleys comprised the entire shipment made on January 11, 1906 to the Copper Queen Consolidated Mining Company.
At some point in their history the pistols were separated and each went its own way. On October 27, 2018, 112 years later, the pistols were reunited. The reunion came about totally by accident. A gun dealer in Texas was in the process of assisting a widow with value of a collection of firearms which had been left to her by her father. There were many valuable Colt pistols in the collection and one of them was a beautiful Colt Bisley. The dealer ordered the history of all of the Colts from the Colt Historian and waited for the reports so that the value of her collection could be finalized.
With the history report in hand it was time to value the Bisley. The dealer began searching the Internet for all available information regarding the pistol as well as the Copper Queen Consolidated Mining Company. He was able to find a great dealer of information regarding the Copper Queen Consolidated Mining Company. The dealer next searched for similar Bisleys which may have been sold or which may be listed for sale. This search led the dealer to a Bisley listing that was remarkably similar to the Bisley which was being valued. The dealer went to the listing and not only was it similar is was identical! In addition to the photographs posted with listing was a copy of the Colt history showing that it was one of two pistols shipped on the same date to the Copper Queen Consolidated Mining Company. There was no doubt about it, the two pistols were brothers. One was in Texas and the other in Colorado.
The owner of the Bisley being valued was contacted and informed of the discovery. The dealer also recommended to the lady that she might want to purchase the Bisley being offered for sale. The dealer explained with all of the documentation of the two pistols the value of them being together would be greater that having them individually. The lady advised the dealer that she had no interest in acquiring any additional firearms but would willingly sell her Bisley to the dealer.
In the end the dealer purchased the Texas Bisley which was offered as well as the Colorado brother. The Brothers Bisley have been reunited and will stay together.
