The “New Line 22” was a single action pocket revolver introduced by the Colt’s Patent Fire Arms Manufacturing Company in 1873 and continued through 1877. Of all the Colt “New Line” revolvers made, the .22 caliber was the only one featuring a 7 shot cylinder. All other calibers utilized a 5-shot cylinder. Two years after the Colt Cloverleaf and House model Revolver in 41 Rim Fire, a year after the Colt Open Top 22, the Colts Derringer single shot was the first metallic cartridge Manufactured by Colt in 1870, Colt Cloverleaf and House model Revolver in 41 Rim Fire in 1871 was the second model rimfire were rear-loading revolvers along with Colt Open Top Pocket Model 22 revolver was the second manufactured in 1871 and the Colt New Line revolver was the third one Manufactured with metallic cartridge, both the Open Top 22 and the New Line 22 were rear-loading revolvers Manufactured by Colt and featured a seven shot cylinder. All of the new Line came out within a few years of one another. The Open Top was manufactured the same years as the Colt Cloverleaf and House model Revolver in 41 Rim Fire. The 22 were designed to be a handy pocket-carry revolver, chambered in .22 Rim Fire which was very popular for self-defense in these days. This revolver was designed to be a small but potent self-defense revolver for stowing in one’s pocket or purse in the 19th Century. Spur Trigger “Suicide Special” manufacturing was fierce during this time, and Colt struggled to compete against the countless small shops making very similar guns and less expensive revolvers. The Colt remained a steady reliable force in firearms for much longer than the rest. Colt did away with all of their small guns by 1886 except for one that they Manufactured all the way up until 1912 which was Colt third Model “THUER” Derringer. It’s unique when you look at it both the Open Top the New Line both had seven shot cylinder’s and both guns were discontinued seven years later.
