Description:
This is a Model 1862 Remington "Zouave" .58 cal. percussion rifle in VG+++ condition with excellent wood and markings. It is 48 inches long with a 33 inch barrel. These rifles were produced by Remington in. Ilion, NY from 1862-1865. This gun was manufactured in 1863, referred to as "Harpers Ferry Pattern" in official Army documents. Delayed in manufacturing or by other issues, Remington did not actually deliver any of the 10,000 plus that were made until April of 1863. . All of the rifles were delivered to the Watervliet Arsenal in New York, but none were ever issued during the course of the war. All of the rifles were sold to Francis Bannerman & Company on August 8, 1907. These rifles never saw any military service.

This gun, according to my seller 25 years ago, was owned by his friend's grandfather, 80 years of age when he passed away in 1965. The lock markings are sharp, the wood is excellent (one flaw--see photo and description below), and the inspector stamp "Steel RKA" (see photo) indicates that this gun was inspected by Remick K. Arnold, inspector from 1862-1877. The barrel bands are marked with "U" and brass patch box with "L". Barrel markings are "V P" and likely small eagles on top, close to the nipple area. The ramrod cannot be sworn to as original but is correct for the gun. The only flaw in the wood is thin stock crack, likely an age crack, starting from the front bottom of the lock--it is approx. 4 inches long and is depicted in 2 of the photos.

This is a beautiful example of a Zouave, which has been in my collection for 25 years and priced to sell.
