Fabulous full custom .338 Winchester Magnum built on a Fred Wells Double Square Bridge Mauser action SN-00001 with a 24" all integral feature barrel with a banded ramp front sight, banded sling stud, and quarter rib with one standing and one folding sight leaves with gold center lines. Stipled sighting plane on both front sight and quarter rib. The Double Square Bridge action barreled and machined for Alaska Arms rings by Fred's son Rube Wells. These are Burgess style lever release rings and the best on the market. Blackburn drop box bottom metal with straddle floorplate and trigger bow release. Blackburn trigger. Jerome Glimm bolt handle with four checkered panels and rosette engraved tip. Top tang extended over the comb. Stocked in a superb piece of English Walnut with darkly contrasting mineral streaks. Pancake shadow line cheekpiece and point pattern checkering that wraps the forend. Double crossbolts and an ebony forend tip. Steel grip cap and checkered steel trap buttplate. Two screw inletted rear sling stud. Extensively scroll engraved to include the barrel, action, floorplate, and trigger guard by Rachel Wells, Fred's widow.  LOP 13 1/2"  Weighs in at 9lb 2oz with rings but no scope.
The late Fred Francis Wells was a legendary machinist and gunmaker, one of only a very small number who could make a Mauser action by hand from a billet of steel using only a lathe and milling machine long before the advent of CNC nachines. This amazing gun built on one of those actions. It was done as a family affair with barreling by Rube Wells and engraving by Rachel Wells. It was then stocked by Winston Elrod of Chesaning, MI who has been building stocks for over 40 years. This gun remains new from a very talented cohort of gunmaking royalty.
