Description:
#6148, Westley Richards 16 Bore Nitro Proved: Westley Richards & Co. London: An Early & True Anson & Deeley Westley Richards Trademark Boxlock 16 Bore Made in 1883 that was Nitro proved in 1990, The joint patent #1756 of May 11, 1875 by John Deeley & William Anson for an action that uses the leverage of the barrels to cock the locks when opening which eliminated the outside hammers, This invention is perhaps the best known of all that came out of the Westley factory, 30" Damascus extractor barrels with Model "C" Bolting Dolls Head & Top Lever Third Bite, This is patent #2506 of 1862 for the dolls head barrel extension which is considered one of the strongest types of locking, The 30" Damascus barrels are .667 .003 & .021" (Skt.I & Imp.Mod.), 2 1/2" chambers, Wall thickness on the right barrel is .033" and on the left barrel .031", Birmingham Nitro Proved in 1990 at 16.9mm bore size at 900 BAR with 65mm (2 1/2") chambers, Rounded action body, Double triggers, Splinter forend with a Deeley & Edge pull down release, Straight hand stock at 14 7/16 x 1 5/8 x 2 1/4" over a smooth steel buttplate, Neutral stock for the right or left hand, Game gun weight at 6 lbs., 30% coverage of period scroll engraving, Excellent wood for this vintage piece with excellent black/brown contrast, Unbelievable how solid this wood is for a gun of this age, Traces of case colors remain, The barrel brown at 98%, The stock finish is at 96%, The checkering at 99%, The barrels inside and out are excellent and totally free of any pits or dings, The barrel striking is excellent, The barrels are on face with excellent bite remaining, The action flats are marked "Anson & Deeley's Patent 5330". The top lever is engraved "Westley Richards Patent". The barrels are serial numbered to the gun. This remains a very solid game gun with a modern 1990 British Proof to Nitro. This gun with the proper light loads will go many more years of fun and field shooting. This piece most likely sold for about 50 English Pounds in 1883.
