Description:
Handsome, lethal and rare 20 bore Grant bar-in-wood hammergun with highly figured 29” nitro Damascus barrels, gorgeous wood, and loads of residual case coloring on the sideplates and action body. Rebounding hammers, double triggers, and extractors.  Presented in a Brady style canvas and leather case with maker’s label and snap caps. Grant no. 5062 was Number 1 of a pair and was made in 1882. Great mechanical and cosmetic condition and very, very rare. How rare is it? No one seems to know not even the maker! The best guess is a mere handful. Balances slightly ahead of the center of the hinge pin making it a great handling and desirable English small bore.   ***   The chambers on the 29” nitro Damascus barrels were lengthened and reproofed for 2-3/4” shotshells. They are topped by a raised solid concave gamestyle rib. The rib is inscribed “Stephen Grant. 67A St. James’s Street. London.” The bores are shiny and the exterior of the barrels has been professionally rebrowned. There are a few very minor scratches and scrapes. The right barrel is bored 0.631 with a constriction of 0.006 for Improved Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.030.The left barrel is bored 0.628 and has a constriction of 0.021 for Full choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.033.   ***   The straight hand stock and splinter forearm are made of highly figured French walnut. Most small bores of that era were made for lads or ladies and this one has a very well done stock extension that ends in a checkered butt. Checkering is crisp. The finish is in very good condition with only a few handling marks from normal usage. Stock dimensions are15-1/4” by 1-9/16” by 2-3/16”. Cast off for the righthand shot.   ***   It was mentioned above that this is a very rare gun. It may be the only Grant 20 bore bar-in-wood hammergun ever made. But that aside it is a great handling and beautiful little hammer double and would make a lethal grouse, woodcock and quail gun. Won’t last long.  ***   Please note that the photographs are part of the description. Not for sale where prohibited by state or local laws. Buyer is responsible for all shipping, insurance, and any other related charges. I give a 3-day non-firing inspection period which begins when it arrives at the buyer’s FFL or specified address if the gun is classified as an Antique. Returns at buyer’s expense.
