Description:
Double Dated 1917/1920 WORLD WAR I DWM 9x19mm GERMAN LUGER Pistol

“S.D.I.257.P.” POLICE Marked WWI Military Pistol

Here we present a World War I Double Dated “1917” & “1920” DWM (Deutsche Waffen-und Munitionsfabriken) Pistole Parabellum P.08 Luger Pistol, originally made in 1917 by DWM in Berlin, Germany. Basing his design off Hugo Borchardt’s seminal C93, Georg Luger successfully brought Borchardt’s work to practical fruition. While finding buyers for the C93 seemed an exercise in futility, the new Luger Pistol found many countries eager to test it and even adopt it. In 1900 the United States ordered 1,000 Lugers in 7.65x21mm Parabellum, or .30 Luger, for infantry and cavalry trials. It received pushback from soldiers that said the caliber was too small and the firearm itself was unreliable. Which, in turn, led to DMW developing the 9mm caliber version of the Luger shortly thereafter.

The top of the chamber is Great War dated “1917” with a rework date of 1920. The top of the toggle is marked “DWM”. The right side of the frame bears German military acceptance marks. This example is police marked from the 1920s “S.D.I.” for the Essen Schupo.

The overall condition is fine. Arsenal refinished. The action is excellent. The bore is shiny bright with sharp rifling. The grips are solid and in good condition. The numbers match throughout including the magazine base. A fantastic piece from the Great War, repurposed for the interwar period, then used during the Second World War.
