This revolver would have been made early in the Allen & Wheelock era which ran from 1856 through 1865. It was designed to be a very simple conceal and carry, self-defense pistol in the turbulent mid-19th Century and likely used in the American Civil War. Ethan Allen was a true family man, investing and partnering with a nephew in a New York sporting goods retailer, hiring another brother-in-law, Thomas Wheelock, who was eventually made a partner, and similarly hiring and later making partner his two sons-in-law Sullivan Forehand and Henry Wadsworth. Because of these practices, his business was very successful. This company was founded by Ethan Allen in early 1800s and soon became a prolific gun-making firm that evolved from Ethan Allen to Allen & Thurber, as well as the Allen & Wheelock Company. It was located in Norwich, Connecticut and Worchester, Massachusetts, as well as Grafton. Eventually it became the Forehand & Wadsworth Company in 1871, after the death of Ethan Allen. The trade names used by Ethan Allen were “E. Allen” between 1831 and 1837 located in Grafton, “Allen & Thurber” between 1837 and 1842 in Grafton, “Allen & Thurber” between 1842 and 1847 in Norwich, “Allen & Thurber” between 1847 and 1854 in Worcester, “Allen & Thurber & Co.” between 1854 and 1856 in Worcester, “Allen & Wheelock” between 1856 and 1865 in Worcester, and finally “E. Allen & Company” between 1865 and 1871 in Worcester. The overall condition is good. Strong action. Good bore for its age. Both grips contain an average amount of handling and remain firmly seated.
