Description:

LETTERED  Revenue Cutter Service Smith & Wesson,,, U.S. MARTIAL, Serial #  26197 was shipped June 27, 1890 to the United States Government,  National Armory,  Springfield MA.  for the Revenue Cutter Service...  is recorded in the FACTORY HISTORICAL LETTER.
Pictured is the  "S.S. Chase" and her crew.    She  was issued  12 of  these  Smith & Wesson  Revolvers chambered in .44 Russian caliber.

The serial number "26197" is located on the revolver butt, the inside of the barrel latch and on the rear face of the barrel. The rear face of the cylinder is numbered "26193".  Both Serial Numbers were shipped to the Revenue Cutter Service  on June 27, 1890.
The cylinder was probably   "switched during cleaning"  or maintenance by a Ship's Armorer, and such was often the case.

The revolver retains 50% original blue finish with the balance a mottled brown-gray patina. Some mild pitting is present with the right side of the frame having a series of scratches. The  hammer retains traces of original case colors. The well worn grips are good.   Mechanically excellent. An extremely rare beast especially with the Smith & Wesson Historic letter. Please feel free to ask questions.
A real piece of America's early COAST GUARD,  Maritime and  Nautical History.
