Description:
PIPE CASED London Proofed Antique COLT New Line .30 Cal. Revolver mfr. 1875

With JOHN BROWNING 63 Strand London Marked Case

Here we present an antique Cased London Proofed Etched Panel Colt New Line .30 Caliber Revolver, made in 1875 in Hartford, Connecticut. A single action revolver, this small pocket revolver was one of a number of inexpensive handguns produced by Colt from 1873 to 1884. The “New Line” was Colt’s first production model handgun chambered for .32 caliber and outnumbered all other pistols in Colt’s “New Line” group. This revolver utilized a .30 caliber rimfire cartridge matched to a 5-shot fluted cylinder fitted to a round barrel. The .30 caliber models were manufactured between 1874 and 1876 with 10,946 revolvers being produced.

This revolver was designed to be a small but potent self-defense revolver for stowing in one’s pocket in the 19th Century. This revolver features 5 shots of .30 Caliber Rimfire, a handsome wizened nickel finish, and rosewood grips. This .30 caliber rimfire variant is unique among Colt firearms in that it is the only revolver produced by Colt that was chambered in .30 caliber. The revolver also had one of the shortest production runs of all Colt handguns, only being manufactured for three years. These .30 calibers are one of the scarcer of the Colt New Lines, twice as rare as a .32 caliber and about five times scarcer than a .22 caliber.

The New Line series of revolvers, including all calibers, was a single action pocket revolver introduced by the Colt’s Patent Fire Arms Manufacturing Company in 1873 and continued through 1884. Two years after the Colt House Revolver, a year after the Colt Open Top, and almost simultaneously alongside the Colt Peacemaker, the Colt New Line was one of the first metallic cartridge, rear-loading revolvers manufactured by Colt.

This example has London proofs along with the John Browning London dealer marked pipe case. When John Browning was at the head of the family firm, his manufactory was first at 111 Minories in London, then as of 1872 at 63 Strand in London as the case is marked. He was an English inventor from a family known for making nautical, navigational, and scientific instruments. His father’s shop (that of William Spencer Browning) is supposed by some to have been an inspiration to Charles Dickens when he wrote his 1848 novel Dombey and Son. John was known to have many patents and designed and produced the likes of microscopes, telescopes, ophthalmoscopes, spectroscopes, barometers, photometers, and cameras. He is even known for installing the first electric light in 1873 London during a feast to honor the visitation of the Shah of Persia hosted by the mayor and the City of London Corporation at the Guildhall. A fascinating man who apparently appreciated Colt’s fine workmanship and ingenuity!

The overall condition is fine. Original nickel finish and fire blue accents. The etched panel is still clear. The action is excellent. The bore is patinated with thin rifling. The grips are in great shape. Numbers match. The pipe case is in good condition. The hinge on the right has pulled away from the rest of the case and has been reattached with adhesive.
