Description:
1844 Antique ROBERT JOHNSON U.S. Model 1836 Percussion CONVERSION Pistol

STANDARD ISSUE Pistol of the MEXICAN-AMERICAN WAR

Here we present an antique Robert Johnson Model 1836 Percussion Conversion Pistol dated 1844 in Middletown, Connecticut. This .54 caliber, smoothbore pistol would have started out life as a flintlock and converted to percussion likely around the time of the American Civil War and is one of approximately 18,000 Model 1836 pistols manufactured by Robert Johnson. The Model 1836 was widely considered to be the best designed and manufactured flintlock pistol.

The pistol has an 8 1/2 inch round barrel with a brass front sight blade, swivel ramrod with button head and iron mountings. The barrel, ramrod, butt cap, barrel band and trigger guard are "bright" finish. The lock plate, hammer, and tang were once casehardened. The lock is marked "US / JOHNSON / MIDDN.CONN. / 1844" below the brass pan. Inspection and proof marks are visible atop the barrel. The left stock flat is marked with two clear oval cartouches. The Model 1836 Flintlock Pistol was the standard issue handgun of the Mexican-American War, and used well into the Civil War, especially in the percussion format.

The overall condition is good. Strong action. The bore is in good shape for its age. Visible markings are legible. This example has been refinished. Solid grip/forend. Two cartouches are present on the left stock flat.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 8-1/2 inches.

Caliber: .54 Percussion

Overall condition as seen in photos.
