Description:
ENGRAVED Joseph Rock Cooper SAW HANDLE Pistol .45

English Made Circa 1840s Saw Handle!

Here we present an antique Saw-Handle Percussion Pistol, made circa the 1840s by Joseph Rock Cooper, of Birmingham. Joseph Rock Cooper was a one of the leading gun, rifle & pistol makers working in Birmingham during the mid-19th century, who was active from 1838 through 1863. He was granted numerous English patents for firearms. This pistol differs from the standard contours of its contemporaries, but these are far from simply aesthetic.

This pistol features a robust frame with ergonomic “saw handle” wooden grips, which place the axis of the bore low in the hand and provides what we would call a “beaver tail” at the top of the hand in today’s jargon. The .45 caliber octagonal barrel is 5-1/2 inches in length and the tang bears a script engraving that reads “J.R. COOPER’S/PATENT No. 175” in two lines. Under the muzzle of the barrel is mounted a captive ramrod that moves on a swivel and is kept tightly in place in the front of the engraved steel frame—this to prevent loss of the ramrod which was a vital piece of equipment. This pistol is crisp, attractive and highly practical.

The overall condition is near fine. The attractive twist pattern remains visible on the barrel. The bore is smooth and in good condition. The action remains excellent, strong and crisp.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 5-1/2 inches.
