Description:
WAR of 1812 Antique U.S. T. FRENCH Contract M1808 Conversion Musket BAYONET

1810 Dated; 1 of only 4,000 Manufactured

Here we present an antique Thomas French Contract Model 1808 Percussion Conversion Musket, manufactured circa 1810 in Canton, Massachusetts. Thomas French was one of 19 gunmakers contracted by the U.S. government to manufacture the Model 1808 Musket. The group of French, Blake, and Kinsley was awarded this U.S. Contract on October 20, 1808 for 4,000 Harpers Ferry Pattern Model 1808 Contract Muskets with all believed delivered between 1809 and 1814. This example would have started out life as a flintlock and likely converted sometime prior to the Civil Wart when the more reliable percussion firing system was being used. Arms were scarce at the start of the war, and many so called “obsolete” weapons were brought out of storage and pushed into service.

The War of 1812 was a conflict lasting about three years that was fought between the United States and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. The conflict began when the United States declared war in June of 1812 and ended in a restoration of the pre-war status quo when a peace treaty agreed to earlier was ratified by the United States in February 1815. Its eventual consequences included the establishment of a separate Canadian state and an end of hopes for an independent American Indian confederation in the Northwest opening the way for the western expansion of the United States.

This musket was converted from flintlock to percussion in a relatively simple way. As you can see, the flintlock hardware was removed but the holes in the lock were not filled and filed as on more refined conversions. A commercial pattern of hammer was used. The name “H  A.H. LANG” appears on the left forestock, which could yield some history of the original user. An inspector’s cartouche is still rather clear on the left stock flat.

The overall condition is good. Original patina. The action is excellent. The bore is untouched, smooth and dusty. The walnut stock is solid and bears an inspector’s cartouche on the left stock flat. This one also has some soldier graffiti carved into the stock on the left side: “H  A.H. LANG”.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 44-5/8 inches.

Caliber: .69 Percussion

Overall condition as seen in photos.
