Description:
**SOLD**  We are very pleased to have this American Civil War production Sharps & Hankins Model 1862 Navy Carbine.  This Sharps & Hankins carbine is the Navy model which features a factory-installed leather covering over the barrel with the goal of protecting the metal from the seawater and additional vigors of being on board a ship.  Sharps & Hankins made approximately 8,000 of the 1862 carbines, with around 6600 being the Navy type like this one.  Most of these naval carbines saw extensive service during the civil war onboard Union Navy vessels.  It is because of this extensive service that only a fraction of these carbines still retain their original leather barrel coverings like this one.  This is serial number 8893, likely made sometime in late 1864.  It is in very good condition overall, and is 100% functional.  The original case colors on the exposed receiver lever, hammer, and trigger have all faded to a gray patina, however you can still see traces of where they were.  All of the factory markings are intact and fully legible, including both markings on the receiver as well as the serial numbered parts.  The right side of the receiver is stamped with "Sharps & Hankins Philada" and the left side is stamped "Sharps Patent 1859".  All of the stamped serial-numbered parts are matching, including the frame, barrel, and lever assembly.  As mentioned before, the 24" inch barrel still has the original leather covering intact.  While it does show some age and deterioration in spots it is in good condition overall for it's age.  The bore in this 1862 Navy Carbine is VERY good, with nice strong and sharp rifling visible throughout the barrel.  The lands are nice and shiny while mainly only the grooves show some scattered minor pitting, none of which is deep or bad.  The bore in this carbine would still shoot very accurately in it's current condition.  The original stock on this Sharps & Hankins is in great shape overall, free from any cracks, chips, repairs, or major damage.  It is unmarked other than a small letter "K" stamped on the keel between the lower tang and lower sling swivel.  While this carbine appears to be untouched everywhere else, the stock has had a coat of clear put on it at some point, likely quite some time ago given it's looks.  All of the original stock hardware is still intact and in good condition, including the brass buttplate and steel factory lower sling swivel.  The action on this Model 1862 Navy is in superb condition.  It opens and closes smoothly and locks up tight with lever droop or slop in it.  The hammer still has both the half-cock and full-cock notches intact, and the frame-mounted hammer-blocking safety is fully operational.  The trigger is in perfect working order as well, as-is the spring-loaded latch that keeps everything locked up when in battery.  If a person could come up with some .52 Rimfire cartridges we have no doubt that this Sharps & Hankins would still shoot reliably and accurately.  If you have been looking for a Civil War carbine to add to your collection this Model 1862 Naval Carbine would be an excellent choice.  It would be very difficult to upgrade from this example in any respect.
