Description:
Here we have a very handsome 1910 mfg Winchester Model 1894 chambered in .32-40 Winchester caliber. The Winchester Model 1894 rifle (also known as the Winchester 94 or Model 94) is a lever-action repeating rifle that became one of the most famous and popular hunting rifles of all time. It was designed by John Browning in 1894 and originally chambered to fire two metallic black powder cartridges, the .32-40 Winchester and .38-55 Winchester. It was the first rifle to chamber the smokeless powder round, the .30 WCF (Winchester Center Fire, in time becoming known as the .30-30) in 1895. In 1901 Winchester created the new .32 Winchester Special caliber with production of rifles starting in 1902. The .32 Winchester Special cartridge, like the .30-30 Winchester cartridge of 1895, is necked down from the .38-55 Winchester cartridge of 1884. The .32 Winchester Special (.321 in) differs from the .30-30 Winchester (.308 in) in bullet diameter. More significantly, Winchester decreased the rate of rifling twist in their Model 94 rifle, from 1:12 when chambered for the .30-30 to 1:16 when chambered for the .32 Winchester Special. Winchester used the slower twist to reduce fouling retention when creating a new cartridge for sportsmen who wanted to reload their own ammunition using black powder and cast bullets. This particular example is in very good overall condition both physically and mechanically. The 26" barrel is round and has a very good bore with strong rifling. This rifle has an elevation adjustable rear sight and the front sight is dovetailed. The metal has some high edge wear and handling marks....the receiver and forend cap have worn to a handsome warm patina. The stock and forend are in very good condition with some pressure marks and a few scratches. The metal butt plate is in very good condition. This amazing Winchester would make a great addition to a collection or a great start to a new collection of historical rifles.
