Description:
Winchester Model 12, 28 gauge SKEET pump action shotgun, circa 1940.  This is a correct factory Skeet grade 28 gauge with solid rib on the 26” skeet choked barrel.

As you know that there seems to be far more “made up” 28 gauge model 12’s than there are real ones!  A buyer must be very careful if they are in fact, looking to purchase a Winchester correct 28 gauge.  Look at my photos and in particular look at the picture of the rear of the action (stock removed) where the “28” is stamped.  That is the single most defining mark of authenticity.  That 28 stamp is nearly impossible to fake and since it is hidden by the stock it is often not checked out.

Then there is the shell guide/stop stamped 28.  That part is sometimes welded-up and ground back to size then restamped or left as 16 or 20.  See the photo of the part from this gun..correct.

28 gauge barrels are sometimes sleeved onto a 16 or 20 gauge block.

And the stampings on the barrels often appear to be faint or over stamped.

Check the ribs.  The vent rib guns, if original will have proof marks on the left side of both the receiver and the rib.  On solid rib guns the proof marks are on the top of the receiver and the left side of the solid rib.

So, if a gun you are looking at does not comply with these criteria, then “let the buyer beware”.

This gun is 100% legitimate with the sole exceptions that I believe the Winchester recoil pad was added and I am not certain about the “jeweling” of the bolt and the carrier.

When I first looked at the receiver I thought that maybe it has been reblued but look at the sharp edges, look at the vertical polishing and look at the barrel chamber ring..all indications of original finish.

So this is a very premium example of a true Model 12 28 gauge SKEET gun.

98% original blue.   Wood is 95% (added pad and “old” crack behind the bottom tang)
