SCARCE Fluted Cylinder REMINGTON-RIDER .36 Cal Navy Revolver  c1863 Antique

CIVIL WAR Era Revolver in “NAVY” Caliber

Here we present an antique Remington-Rider Double Action New Model Belt Revolver, made from 1863-1865. Only 3,000-5,000 are thought to have been manufactured. This was an early double action revolver made during the American Civil War. This one being fairly early with a serial number in the mid-600s. The distinctive fluted cylinder also pegs this for one of the earliest and this feature makes an already scarce gun quite rare. This is in the “Navy” caliber of .36.

The New Model Belt began production as a percussion pistol but was quickly adapted to metallic cartridges. The factory conversion of a percussion pistol to cartridge involved machining out part of the frame, as well as machining the cylinder and fitting it with a special cap. Not many have survived today in the original percussion configuration. These would have been handy sidearms during the war as well as on the frontier. These were right on the cutting edge with that double action.

The overall condition is good. Gray patina. This one has the large German silver cone-shaped front sight. The action is strong in double and single action. Cylinder lockup is not reliable and would not suggest firing this without that issue worked out. The bore is reflective of light with sharp rifling. The grips are solid and smooth. Numbers match. A nice, early example of a scarce Remington Double Action revolver!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 6-1/2 inches.

Caliber: .36 Percussion
