Description:

This is the last and in my opinion the best model of the 1858. The changes with this 1863 model came about because of issues with the earlier changes. The pistol had a solid top strap which made it easy to remove cylinder for a fast change to another loaded cylinder. The down side was on the earlier models is the cylinder pin could work out just by carrying or riding a horse. By adding a screw and changing that the pin only would come forward with the ramrod lowered it solved that problem.
The other much needed change was the addition of safety notches on the cylinder which let the wearer load all 6 chambers and carry safely. Remember early on most only loaded 5 and left the hammer on an empty chamber. As a combat infantryman that fought in Vietnam I can really appreciate that change.
The serial number is an easy to remember 70,000 and is stamped in the normal locations. Still carry's 85+ original finish, screw slots are perfect and the pistol was never used as a hammer as evident by the butt. Being the .44 Army it has an 8” barrel and is a 6 shot. The grips are original with a clear cartouche on the left grip panel. This one was made in May 63 but probably delivered to the Army in early 1864. Fully functional and locks up tight, the bore is excellent.

At 77 I have to start thinning my collection and passing them on to those that appreciate what I have collected over the years. I also know I have more latitude in selling an antique but even those I'll rather ship to an FFL, we can discuss that.
