Model 1861 INFANTRY MUSKET with CSA BUTT PLATE CIVIL WAR Antique The Everyman’s Primary Arm in the ACW Here we present an antique Model 1861 Civil War Rifle-Musket, made circa 1864. The M1861 was the primary musket at the start of the American Civil War for the Union Army. The musket was designed to fire the .58 caliber minie ball. The Model 1861 is representative of the “everyman’s” rifle during the war. About 1.5 million rifle-muskets were made in the U.S., over 800,000 of which were made by the Springfield Armory. This was the last hurrah of the rifle-musket as arms development and tactics rapidly advanced during the short period of the American Civil War. Nevertheless, the 1861 represented new technology as it was made for use with the Minié ball, a hollow based, conical projectile that was small enough to quickly push down the muzzle of a rifled barrel and expanded to create a good gas seal unlike a solid, round ball. Almost immediately after the war, the U.S. military switched from the old muzzle loading type weapons to the newer breech loading rifles, bringing an end to the musket as a standard frontline firearm in American history. This one is a bit mysterious. This is the model made for the Union Army during the American Civil War. The lock is unmarked except for the date of 1864. There is no dishing or scouring that would indicate the maker’s markings that are usually in the center of the lock were removed. Likewise, there are not the usual “V”, “P”, and eagle head proofs on the left side of the barrel; rather, there is an “M” and a “3”. There is a “B” stamped on the top of the barrel. No Ordnance cartouches on the left stock flat. The butt plate is of brass and marked “CSA”. The overall condition is very good. Bright armory finish. The action is excellent. The barrel has been smooth-bored to .60 caliber. The stock has a crack at the butt stock that remains stable and immovable; shows use. An interesting piece! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 40 inches. Caliber: .60 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
