Description:
***   BUY a SINGLE for Just $18,995 OR The PAIR For $37,990   ***   Handsome pair of Grant consecutively numbered beautifully engraved sidelock ejector 16 bores in the most lethal of gauges. Cased in their original oak & leather double gun case with maker’s label and accessories. Highly figured French walnut stocks, disc set strikers, and 29” Sir Joseph Whitworth Fluid Steel barrels. The late Cyril Adams, owner of Atkin, Grant & Lang, reported that this is the only 16 bore pair ever made by Grant and that a total of only six 16 bore guns were ever made by the firm! The pair, nos. 7921 and 7922, was completed in 1912-13 and weigh 6lb 2oz each. Solid mechanical condition.  ***   The 29” nitro Whitworth Steel barrels are chambered for 2-1/2” shotshells and have Grant patent ejectors. Rumors to the contrary notwithstanding, 16 gauge 2-1/2” ammunition is being imported into the US again, principally from Gamebore and RST is producing these desirable low pressure shotshells as well. They are topped by a raised solid concave gamestyle rib marked numbers 1 and 2 in gold. The ribs of both sets of barrels are inscribed “Stephen Grant & Sons, 67A St. James’s Street, London”. The top of the left barrel on both guns is inscribed “Sir Joseph Whitworth’s” and the top of the right barrel on both sets is inscribed “Fluid Pressed Steel”. The guns were nitro proofed in London for 1oz loads. The bores are shiny and bright. The bluing is also in good condition but there are a few signs of wear near the muzzles. The right barrel of No. 1 is bored 0.664 with a constriction of 0.003 for Skeet choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.028. The left barrel of No.1 is bored 0.665 and has a constriction of 0.006 for Improved Cylinder. Minimum wall thickness is 0.029. The right barrel of No.2 gun is bored 0.664 with a constriction of 0.003 for Skeet choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.028. The left barrel of No. 2 is bored 0.665 and has a constriction of 0.007 for Improved Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.028. The pair is chambered in the most lethal of gauges and as such is an upland gunner’s dream. Sixteen gauge is a ”square load” much like 28 gauge. It has a short shot string and the shot arrives all at once. Ideal for fast flushing quail, ruffed grouse, woodcock and many other upland birds.   ***   The straighthand stocks and splinter forearms are made of highly figured French walnut. The traditional flat-topped checkering is in good condition. The finish is in good condition as well but there are some handling marks from normal usage. A note on wood color: The photo showing the right side of the buttstocks is more representative of their true darker hue. The drop dimensions for both guns are 1-1/2” at the comb and 2-1/4” at the heel. The No.1 gun has a length of pull of 14-3/4” and the No. 2 gun measures 14-5/8”. Both are cast off slightly for the righthand shot.   ***   Opportunities to purchase a pair like this present themselves sometimes only once in a lifetime. Don’t let this one slip away!    ***   Please note that the photographs are part of the description. I am an FFL and will need a copy of your dealer’s FFL license. Not for sale where prohibited by state or local laws. Buyer is responsible for all shipping, insurance, and any other related charges. I give a 3-day non-firing inspection period which begins when it arrives at the buyer’s FFL or specified address if the gun is classified as an Antique. Returns at buyer’s expense.
