Description:
Here we have an honest and extremely handsome Winchester Model 1873 Deluxe lever action chambered in .44-40 Winchester caliber. The Model 1873 was one of the most successful Winchester rifles of its day, with Winchester marketing it as "The Gun that Won the West". Still an icon in the modern day, it was manufactured between 1873 and 1923. It was originally chambered for the .44-40 cartridge, which was the first centrefire cartridge and which became immensely popular. The 1873 was later produced in .38-40 and .32-20, all of which later became popular handgun cartridges of the day, allowing users to carry just one type of ammunition. This particular 1873 example is chambered in .44-40 caliber. The Winchester 1873’s tough frame, stronger chambering, and wide-scale availability helped transform the rifle into the legend it is today. Ned Crossman, a prolific firearms writer in the early 20th century, wrote that the sturdy Model 1873 “put the name Winchester on the map of the West, trotting along with the equally formidable Colt gun at the belt of the frontiersman.” This particular example is in stunning condition and truly beautiful. It has about every option that was offered in 1890. Tang mounted aperture sight, deluxe wood, fine checkering, ebony inset in the pistol grip, sling swivels, half octagon and half round barrel. The buckhorn rear sight is adjustable for elevation and the front is a dovetailed blade. The 24" barrel has a very good bore with strong rifling. The action operates very smoothly and locks up tightly. The finish has worn to a very handsome grey patina. The wood is incredible with only small handling marks. The metal crescent butt plate is in very good condition. This fine Winchester would make an excellent addition to collection of historical wild west firearms. If this rifle could talk it would likely have more than a few tales of adventure.
