Description:
Percussion target rifle from NE Ohio. Built by M. Wood (Mason Wood) of Chatham Center, Lafayette Township, Medina County, Ohio. Probably made in the mid 1850's. Barrel was made by Peter N Reitzli of Canton Ohio (Walnut and 5th St). On the bottom of the barrel under the wood, is the name S. Gates with a starburst pattern.  This is  likely the original owner. The rifle is 48" long; half stocked (wood is reddish brown); 32" octagonal barrel, 1 1/8" across the flats. .40 caliber. Open sights, Brass furniture including patch box. The barrel weighs 12 lbs. I do not know how the rifle came to Southeastern Michigan. It came to me from my grandfather through my father. I have fired the rifle mny times and my father took it deer hunting several times. $850 includes shipping
