Description:
Rare 1890 GOVT CAVALRY OVERRUN COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY Revolver SAA Antique

Rinaldo A. Carr Inspected Nickel Finish 7 ½” .45

Here we present an antique Colt Single Action Army Revolver in .45 Colt, manufactured in 1890 in Hartford, Connecticut. This particular Colt Single Action Army Revolver is intriguing, to say the least. It is an R.A.C. inspected Colt Model 1873 that was never stamped “U.S.”, the full acceptance marking that would have gone on the left side of the frame just to rearward of the patent markings. This, combined with a lack of a condemnation marking “C”, would indicate that this was an overrun on one of the government contracts. Rather than let a perfectly good revolver go to waste, Colt’s simply sold it commercially.

This revolver maintains its original 7 ½” cavalry-length barrel in the original .45 chambering, as well as Rinaldo A. Carr’s initials on the barrel, frame, and cylinder. There is another inspector’s marking “K” that appears on the barrel, trigger guard, grip frame, and interior frame under the grips. The barrel and cylinder are “P” proofed. The hammer slot is marked “O”. The left side of the barrel is marked “45 COLT”.

This piece has matching serial numbers throughout, including the frame, grip frame, and trigger guard. Assembly numbers on the barrel, ejector rod housing (underneath), cylinder, interior frame and grip frame (under the grips), and the interior flat of the loading gate all match. There is a small 6-pointed star on the right rear part of the trigger guard bow, indicating work done by the Colt’s factory. In combination with the matching assembly numbers throughout, this indicates that this revolver was refinished in nickel by the factory. Finally, we have the patent dates, which are of the 3-date, 2-line variety that Graham, Kopec, & Moore in A Study of the Colt Single Action Army Revolver observed as occurring in the 135000 range (p.254). Their lowest known serial with this style patent date was in the #135400 serial range (p.59). Likewise, this gun is a lower number than they had observed for a Rampant Colt trademark stamped behind the patent date, which was #134996, shipped in September of 1890 (p.59).

The overall condition is fine. Factory nickel finish with original patina. The action is excellent, with all 4 clicks and the safety-, half-, and full-cock notches held strong. Excellent timing and lockup. The bore is in very good condition with nice rifling and patinated. The serial numbers and assembly numbers all match. The 2-piece walnut grips were clearly made for this revolver but are unnumbered; they remain solid and in great shape, showing honest use. This is a rare Colt Single Action Army, being a fully inspected overrun from a government contract, as well as being well below the lowest observed serial numbers observed by Ron Graham, John A. Kopec, and C. Kenneth Moore for both the 4th style (2-line, 3-date) patent marking and the Rampant Colt Trademark.
