Description:
Greene breech-loading percussion carbine manufactured by the Massachusetts Arms Company for the British government c. 1856. Approximately 2,000 of these Greene carbines were manufactured circa 1855-1857 on contract with the British for use in the Crimean War. All but a few hundred were reportedly scrapped for parts later, with few seeing military service. They differ from the American type in the larger caliber, the use of Queen Victoria's "St. Edward's Crown/VxR" cipher on the lock, British proofmarks, shorter barrel, hexadecagonal section ahead of the rear sight, sling ring on the lower tang, and a steel buttplate and patch box. The gun is .54 caliber, 18 inch round barrel with 16-sided hand grip in the center, and folding leaf rear sight. The receiver has two triggers, the front trigger serves as the barrel latch. The lockplate has a Maynard primer magazine ahead of the hammer. A sling ring is mounted on the lower receiver tang. The walnut stock has an iron buttplate and patch box. The markings are sharp and fine. The bore is excellent. The barrel is smooth gray, with two small areas of pitting, likely from long-term resting on two high points. The lockplate is stamped "MASS. ARMS CO/CHICOPEE FALLS/1856" in three lines followed by British "Crown/VxR" Royal Cypher. The primer magazine door is tamped "MAYNARD'S PATENT/SEP.22. 1845" in a circle. British inspection marks are stamped on the barrel, receiver and patch box. The British "S/Broad Arrow", "Sold-Out-Of-Service" (surplus) mark is stamped on the left side of the barrel. The serial number "1778" is stamped on the underside of the multi-sided hand grip and on one of the barrel locking lugs. Very Good++ condition overall, with exceptional tight mechanics and bore. This is a rare one.
