Description:
8th CAV CO E MARKED Indian Wars Antique .44 REMINGTON New Model ARMY

8th CAVALRY REGIMENT, COMPANY E Marked Revolver

Here we present an antique U.S. Remington New Model Army Revolver, made circa the late-1860s in Ilion, New York. The New Model Army was manufactured from 1863 to 1875 with a total production of approximately 132,000 and represented the last of Remington’s .44 caliber percussion revolvers.

This example has the grip inlaid with brass and copper stars & diamonds. The grip is stamped with “CoE”, “8th CAV”, along with a carved crescent moon which likely once contained a similar metal inlay to the others. The 8th Cavalry was formed in 1866 at Camp Reynolds on Angel Island in California, just after the American Civil War and during the Indian Wars. Naturally, officers were all veterans of the war and many of the enlisted men had come to California as 49ers and others seeking their fortunes and adventure. The 8th was variously all over the western territories including Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas, in addition to Oregon, Montana, and North Dakota trying to fight and control various native tribes who rebelled against the control the US government was exerting.

The overall condition is good. Gray/brown patina. The action (hammer/trigger) is strong and the cylinder indexes but there is no lock up. The bore is in great shape, shiny bright with sharp rifling. The grips show use and remain solid. The numbers match on the barrel, trigger guard and frame as well as the cylinder. Single letter ordnance inspection marks throughout with a good cartouche at the bottom of the left grip panel.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 8 inches.

Caliber: .44 Percussion

Overall condition as seen in photos.
