Description:
Browning Superposed D5 two-barrel set*, 20 gauge and 9.3x74R. Originally made in 1950 this set is factory engraved in what was the highest grade available at the time..the D5 and the engraving is double-signed by the Master himself, Felix Funken.

In the decade of the 1950’s, there were five standard Browning grades:  Gr I, Gr II (later to become the Pigeon), Gr III known as the Fighting Cocks, Gr IV and Gr V (late to become the Diana).  The Gr VI did not come about until 1957 and later known as the Midas.

Additionally in the 1950’s FN had four other groups of engraving:  The standard “A” series; the Standard Engraved models called “B” series; the DeLuxe models referred to as “C” grades and the highest grade the Super DeLuxe.  In the Super DeLuxe or “D” models there were five grades with the D5 being the highest.

The gun above is extremely rare in that it is a D5 grade with what is known as very fine Louis XVI style; it is a two barrel “continental” set of a shotgun set and a rifle set; and engraved by Funken.

The 20-gauge barrels are 27 7/8” (28”) long, choked .012” Modified and .025” Full, with 3” chambers.  The top rib on the shotgun barrels is a narrow, hand filed vent style.

The 9.3x74R barrels are 25 ¾” with a narrow solid rib.  Folding rear sight and standing front sight.

As mentioned above the receiver is profusely engraved in the D5, Louis XVI pattern covering the entire exterior of the receiver and finished in grey.  Take a look at the picture of the bottom/long tang..the two screws are held in place by two fitted retaining screws.  That same attention to detail is hidden within the receiver in that all internal parts are polished in a D5!

The wood is beautiful French walnut with a skip line checkered butt and what looks like 32 line per inch checkering on the grip as are the three piece forearms on the shotgun and rifle barrels.  The straight-grip stock has a 14 5/8” LOP, a 1 7/16” DAC and a 2” DAH with a slight 3/16” cast for a right hand shooter.

Non-automatic safety/selector
D5 checkered and greyed trigger
Weighs:  6 lbs. 7 oz. with the shotgun barrels and 7 lbs. 4 oz. with rifle barrels.

*Since there are no Browning markings on the gun it is fairly safe to assume that the gun specially ordered and built to a European customer’s specifications in 1950.  Import records confirm that this D5 has only been in the USA for about a year!  Now, I am quite certain that this is a composed set with the gun starting as a Funken engraved Express Rifle with the 20 gauge barrels added in the early 1970's!

At that time the gun was more than likely restocked with the Schnabel Three-piece forearms.  The "diamond" vent rib posts, the pin holding the ejector, the 3" chambers and the barrel address all support my assertion that the 20 gauge barrels were added at a later date!

The gun appears to be unfired and retains 99% since restoration.

I don’t know but I am guessing that the leather luggage case was also added.
